The Lexiteria & alphaDictionary
The Lexiteria Corporation is a Pennsylvania USA company with offices in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. We specialize in custom translation management, custom-created dictionaries and commercial word frequency lists of the world's languages. (As word specialists, we know why customer comes from custom!) We also sponsor the alphaDictionary language resource site, that offers a wide variety of language materials intended to help its visitors learn and master anything they need to know about their native language or other languages.
Our president is Dr. Robert Beard, the former CEO of yourDictionary.com, a company which he founded with two partners in 1999. Dr. Beard has a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Michigan and taught Russian and Linguistics at Bucknell University from 1965-2000. He is the author of three books and many articles on linguistics in which he develops a complete theory of morphology (the study of words) called Lexeme-Morpheme Base Morphology. This theory is still being explored by other linguists and his Separation Hypothesis, the hypothesis that the meaning and sounds of words are processed as separate mental operations, is widely accepted in the field of Linguistics today. At yourDictionary.com Dr.Beard wrote the articles and words of the day under the pseudonym of Dr. Language. At alphaDictionary, he is the good Dr. Goodword.
Our Head Systems Administrator and chief software developer is Andrew Shaffer, who created the inventive search engine and rich functionality of the Word of the Day feature for yourDictionary.com before creating all the software for the alphaDictionary and Lexiteria websites. Andrew has a BA in computer science from Cornell University (Magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa). He appealed to us because he had worked on an NSF-funded research project on automated reasoning that involved crossword puzzle construction and co-authored two professional articles as an undergraduate. Andrew also has a long list of stage credits, including acting and directing in the Gaspipe Theatre Company's Shakespeare in the Park series right here in downtown Lewisburg.
Lexicographer Dawn Shawley serves as Office and Translation Manager of Lexiteria, the parent company of alphaDictionary. A native of Minnesota, she earned her English and German degree by studying in Germany, student teaching in Croatia, and exploring nearby countries. Her nearly three years of teaching ESL lends itself well to composing the words for Goodword Junior in the guise of Miss Spelling. She and her husband live outside of Milton, Pennsylvania with their two sons. Dawn also teaches yoga, and in her free time she enjoys reading, walking, flea markets, and crafts.
Brian Hilkert is our Accounts Manager. He graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Business Administration with a major in accounting from Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. He started his career keeping accounts for a retail floor covering store in the area and has over 13 years experience in the field. He also owned and operated a small computer business for 5 years. Brian now lives in Danville, Pennsylvania with his lovely wife, Irina, a Russian native of Kazakhstan, and their son.
