Corrected List of Phobias

Below is a list of phobias that originated on the website of the Canadian Mental Health Association Edmonton Region. The original list had problems, including words based on English, Spanish, and French roots. These problems have been exacerbated by copying this list and passing it from website to website managed by laymen unfamiliar with Greek, Latin or the rules of Greek compound composition.

This list below probably does not solve all the problems. Some of the misconstructions and misspellings have permeated the English-speaking world to such an extent it is probably impossible to correct them. We have tried to draw a line between these and the correctables. For a longer discussion of what we have done, click here.

A person possessed of a phobia is a -phobe, e.g. acrophobe, claustrophobe, Russophobe. The adjective describing these conditions is -phobic, e.g. acrophobic, claustrophobic, Russophobic. You may convert the adjectives into adverbs by simply adding -ly.
