Pageant

David Mamet, the playwright and screenwriter, has described presidential campaigns as pageants. And the old writer William Allen White wrote a book on the topic entitled "Masks in a Pageant". As a way of comparing one of our fundamental political processes to a beauty contest, I think this...

Sortition

Sortition, the idea of selecting political leaders by lottery, is being seriously discussed by an interesting minority of democratic theorists. In fact there will be a conference on this topic at Bard College this coming fall. It's an unfamiliar term and I think worthy of analysis as a Good Word.

I hope it wouldn't create too much ado if this word, which I like, is selected as a Good Word.

I know this is a medical term, but I'm sure the Doctor can suggest ways in which it could become handy in other contexts.

This word is coming up in the newspapers lately. It's a new one to me. I offer it as suggested Word of the Day.

Problematic

According to my imperfect recollection, this word seems to have shifted its meaning over the years from "questionable" or "dubious" to definitely "wrong beyond question". I suggest that it merits discussion as a Word of the Day.

Limbic

In her New York Times column today (online) Michelle Goldberg has this sentence: "Shaggy, pretentious and endlessly cynical, Bannon presented himself as a man with a limbic connection to Trump’s base." I have always regarded "limbic" as a medical term. I think her use of it merit...

Sometimes events in the public sphere bring this word to mind. This is one of those times, hence I recommend it as a GOOD WORD of the day.

Good word suggestion: Hunker

In today's news about the coronavirus we are all told to "hunker down". The word "hunker" seems strange. It rhymes with "clunky" and it's hard to grasp what this word has to do with isolation, although it seems to suggest crouching or even hiding. But even without under...

Deterrence

The current confrontation with Iran brings to mind a word that was in frequent use during the Cold War: Deterrence. Perhaps the time is now ripe for it to be discussed in Word of the Day. I'd like to learn more about the history of this word.

Smug

"Smug" is a good, short, punchy word that refers to a quality we should all avoid. I hope I'm not guilty of it when I assume that it would be a good topic for Word of the Day.

Encroach

"Encroach" occurred to me as a viable candidate for the Word of the Day when my next door neighbor began building a fence that veered into my back yard. I don't think that it's ever been discussed by you, so here it is.

Dear Dr. Goodword,

Rudy Giuliani's recent foray into national television to defend Trump against the Stormy Daniels challenge brings to mind the word "debacle". If you haven't analyzed this word before, I suggest that it merits your attention now.

Dear Alpha Agora, I think now is the appropriate time for a discussion of the verb "harass" and the noun "harassment". It seems to be the word of the day and your wit and vast knowledge will make for most useful daily analysis. I suggest you devote a discussion to this word while...
