Either

It's been a while since I suggested a word, but the word history of "either" was unique to me. I also liked the usage notes. (see link below) Word Origin & History either O.E. ægðer, contraction of æghwæðer "each of two, both," from a "always" + ge- collective prefi...

Re: Effable

I came across ineffable in an old rendition of the Bible verse, 1 Peter 1:8 where it says "ineffable joy" and had to look it up. (Knox version, now out of print).

Re: laundromat or Laundromat

Although the Westinghouse trademark for "laundromat," stylized, has expired, there is currently an active trademark "LAUNDROMAT" in any font/style (Reg. No.3010429, Registered Nov 1, 2005). The goods are described as "Fragrance for personal use, room fragrance, cologne, bat...

Re: laundromat or Laundromat

I had no idea this was ever a trade name. I wonder why Microslop is continuing to protect it?

laundromat or Laundromat

This word came up because Microsoft Word wanted to capitalize it and I wanted to know why. Turns out it was originally a Westinghouse brand name. I had no idea and simply thought it was a place where you can wash clothes by paying for use of the machines. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/laund...

Re: Phantasmagoria

Magic lanterns have virtually disappeared, replaced by film slides, and now by digital photographs that make "slide" shows easy. A great word, and good luck with the novel.
Thanks!

Phantasmagoria

I actually had an occasion to use a derivative of this word in a sentence. She shut her eyes and willed the picture of the wagon crushing his body to escape from her head. Instead, it returned, replaying in a most horrible phantasmagoric fashion. That sentence for a book I'm writing. phantasmagoria ...

Explode

What's more interesting to me about this word than the definition itself is it's origin and the tie to theatrics. I notice the original meaning is listed as obsolete. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/explode explode 1530s, from L. explodere "drive out or off by clapping," originally ...

I note that Suzanne displays a penchant for spelling anything. Is that a knack or do you have a secret you could share? I'm a good speller, but if I look at any word, even cat, long enough I start to wonder. LOL. No secret. I am a professional proofreader, going on 16 years now. However, that doesn...
