Re: Good word suggestion: suffrage

Hello Perry! What a wonderful idea! Thank you! I would love to hear more about it. Will you write a book? Or are you sending out newsletters? Or what? And Victor Frankl – here you have an incredible example of someone who would not be defeated by circumstances (I apologize profoundly for the simplif...

Re: Good word suggestion: suffrage

Hello Perry and Philip – Thanks for your interest. I will try to give you a reasonably brief answer. You know of course that I have stolen this sentence from Albert Camus and that it is the second part of a statement in his "Myth of Sisyphus". The first part says that "the struggle it...

Re: Good word suggestion: suffrage

How interesting! Many thanks!
Incidentally, there is a similar meaning in German, where "to suffer" means "leiden". "Jemanden gut leiden können" means to like or even love somebody very much.
Best regards from Germany

Good word suggestion: suffrage

Hi everybody -

How about suffrage for a good word? Has it anything to do with suffer? (I apologize for this very likely stupid question - still, I wonder).

Many thanks in advance

Re: Quarantine

Stubborningly? A sign of illiteracy, perhaps? I can't even dream up a meaning for it. Yuck! " Many thanks! I am happy that I was right. The word sounds so ugly. As you say: yuck! It was in a text that I had to translate, written by an American person. Thanks for pointing out "res d...

Re: Quarantine

I wonder if it has anything to do with the biblical flood of forty days and nights. Yes, it does. But 40 days is a period that occurs quite frequently in the Bible (e.g. Exodus: Moses was with God 40 days and 40 nights). Quite complex, I believe. Incidentally I came across the word "stubbornin...

Re: peter

In that case, wouldn't the god who condemned him to that punishment be himself frustrated beyond endurance. I thought the idea was eternal punishment. Of course, he can be seen as a parable for assembly-line or cubicle workers. Just goes to show the vanity and absurdity of human attempts to explain...

Re: peter

Hello Perry - this is a very good question. Of course, nobody must do anything, unless they have to. It's just that I have noticed quite some time ago that this Camus quote says it all in a nutshell for me. If we want to understand Sisyphus, we must imagine him happy. But if you don't want to or hav...

Slava: Thank you very much! You are a mind reader! Before I even could find the time to formulate an email message to you, you have already replied to it. Incidentally, I tried to send yesterday's good word to a friend via your website, but it never arrived. I'm mentioning this only because I've rea...

Hello Philip -

That was quick! Many thanks!
Could you tell me when it was posted originally? I tried to find it in the archives but didn't succeed. There is no aplphabetical search option, only in the dictionary.

Best regards
