Re: Mogigraphia

Interesting, but anachronistic. What we need now is a highfalutin word for carpal tunnel syndrome. :)

Re: TOURBILLION

So, just now you get around to telling us about this word? I can think of specific instances in the past where I might have used it. But no. Too late; too late. Maybe one day the opportunity will arise again.

Re: DEISM

I think I might have a bit of a problem calling deism a "religion." It's an opinion as to the existence of deity, as opposed to, say, atheism or theism. Christians, Muslims, Hindus, most Buddhists, etc., would, I think, complain if you were to suggest they're members of the same religion b...

You know, I don't remember where I first ran into it. I did use it in a story I wrote once, but it's one of those words you want to reserve for special occasions.

Interesting. I had always assumed we use it the way we do because of the way the wire recoils when cut after having tightly bound a bale of hay.

I'd always thought that the proper pronunciation of the adjective was con-SUM-mate (accent on the second syllable).

Indeed! Of those 1200 churches, not a one seems to have noticed my absence.

This is one of those rare words that I can actually remember having learned. I was reading something by Mark Twain (One of his letters? I'm not sure) and he used the word "bathotic," but then he mentioned that he thought he probably didn't have it right. That led me to look it up and add a...

To me, "onomatous" makes more sense, because it's derived from the Greek onoma ("name"). But, yeah, I can see how "onymous" would catch on better. The obvious play off of "anonymous" is one reason. It's also not quite the tongue-tripping obstacle that "on...
