Re: Tump

The word can also mean small hillock or defensive mound I believe in the UK. I used to go egg rolling down the tump in my aunt and uncles village

Re: Grateful

Thank you for this! I was thinking though, what is the difference between grateful and thankful? Are they complete synonyms or are they slightly different? My innate sense tells m they are different but I can't define how. Any thoughts?

Re: Slate

Hmmm I'm British and I've never really heard or used "knock up" in the sense of waking someone up. Getting someone pregnant, yes...rubbers are condoms not shoes - never heard shoes called rubbers. Erasers we call rubbers, yes...
Just thought I'd say what I was thinking!!

Re: Histrionics

Does this at all possibly have any relation to hysteria and the relation to female reactions (hysterectomy because women were considered to be emotional because of their wombs)

Slut

Where did this word come from? I have heard that originally it meant a woman who did not keep her room clean-is this true and if so how did it come to have such a perjurive sense?

Addiction

Thinking of the recent demise of Whitney Houston, and Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson and many other talented people, I was wondering where does the word come from and what exactly does it mean?

Bonfire

I was thinking about the time of year - Guy Fawkes, gun powder plot and all associated and wondered why a bonfire is so called?
Any ideas?
