How does a word become a word?
I had a Brazilian student with an amazing talent for learning English. I was constantly in stitches with this kid because he also had an amazing ability to make up words. I think my favorite was: impotential - having the potential to render someone impotent. "That girl is so ugly she has impote...

I'm not, but thanks for asking :) . Apparently my problem is that I speak too HARD. If I pretend my tongue and lips are paralyzed I seem to do better. Of all the languages I've tried, Norwegian and Thai have got me beat, for sure. With Thai, I can't relax my mouth enough, and with Norwegian, g...

carrion
carrion - the carcass of a dead animal that becomes food for other scavenging animals.
A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons.
The stewardess looks at him and says, "I'm sorry, sir, only
one carrion allowed per passenger."

Besides, where does that Spanish j come from? Brazilian dude I don't know about Spanish, but I had a theory about how some of the Brazilian Portuguese pronunciations developed....just don't shoot me. :? I've noticed how each different culture makes not only the same mistakes with pronunciation, but...

I have a question...how are you doing with pronunciation in your Chinese class? I had a student that could hardly make herself clear when speaking English, but could write better than most Americans her age. And when she tried to teach me to speak a few phrases, she would laugh and laugh. I thought ...

Okay, so I didn't see the movie. Was this an actual Portuguese line in the movie, or a translation of this particular line in English to Portuguese. I'm not sure I get it. I have a few Brazilian DVD's that I bought some time ago on my first trip to Brazil. I wanted to see if I could actually ...

...they believe that reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing and speaking skills all are acquired in parallell. I disagree. F'rinstance, I translate unhesitatingly just about any odd subject matter from French into Swedish, but ask any Francophone, and they'll say that I don't speak...

For me, I wouldn't say it helped with English as much as it helped with understanding LANGUAGE in general. The more languages you learn, (or try to  ), the greater your understanding of how languages work becomes. In my case, I teach English to foreigners. If anything, I think my English just ...
