Ah, sisu! Maybe that's what keeps the sauna discussion going, too. Our family didn't maintain the birch sprig traditions, but my grandparents always kept large sea sponges on hand for good back scrubbing. Of course that requires having a partner sitting next to you on "ta pench."

Lesh for leash? Geesh. Now as for Eye-talyan, it took me awhile to learn the soft "i" on that one, but I'm still trying to run from "I-rack" and "I-ran".

While the American Heritage Dictionary gives the flattened Mid-western pronunciation, the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary gives two versions, one "flat", the other a bit more like the authentic Finn.

Yes, the word is mispronounced across most of the US, except in places where people speak Finnish (actually, they're just leaving out the middle syllable --the long u sound. Now you can teach others to say it correctly, too!
