Re: Homely
In Ireland, describing someone as homely means they make you feel at home, and doesn't pertain to looks. I was in Ireland visiting an elderly relative some years back, and when she described me as homely, she immediately had to explain that she found me to be very friendly.

cornball
I was talking to my husband about my father, who used to say about leftovers, "I don't want to see it go to waste, so I'll have it go to my waist" and mentioned that you could take that two ways. Anyway, he said my dad had a real cornball sense of humor. And I wondered, where did that word...

Paraclete - Holy Ghost

Trifecta
My brother used this word in an email, claiming he couldn't come to our Thanksgiving dinner because of a "trifecta" of other obligations. Then, today in the newspaper, I read how a local school superintendent would be facing a "trifecta" of financial problems. This seems an odd u...

Not completely unemployed!
The public library in my little town has the distinguished title of "Ulysses Philomathic Library". There is a stone engraved at the entrance, which says "philomathic means a love of learning." There may be other Ulysses Libraries in the United States, but none so fond of learning...
