Re: Dreadnought

I'll just say "amen" to Jasaco's comment - I was surprised that the guitar body style was overlooked.

Having been sort of a unix guy (in a previous life), and knowing some of the people that were deep into unix, I find it easy to believe that someone knew the norse word...

Awkward

I happened on this word today, and I was struck with how strange it was that someone might be moving toward "awk". I looked it up and thought it might be a good candidate for a Goodword. Awk came from old norse: wrong, turned backwards, contrary.

Just a thought...
Thanks!

stereophonic / stereo

I ran into a jumble this morning for which the answer was " stereotypical ", and it started me thinking about why stereo was a part of this word as well as stereophonic. I learned through the etymology that stereo by itself is the literal Greek for solid, and that stereotype was the most u...

Conversation

I woke up this morning with this word (conversation) in my head - wondering how it came to mean what it does these days, so I came to the Dr. GoodWord to see if it had been discussed and apparently it has not. I thought I'd offer it up as a candidate. I looked it up on one of my favorite etymology s...

Salt and Saltate

I looked at a couple of online etymology sites and couldn't find a link between "saltate" and "salt", but I feel like there must be a connection somewhere. Anyone have an idea/opinion/answer?

Disposition

While I lay in bed this morning in that semi-dreamlike state, a word popped into my head... ( disposition ). It seemed a bit strange to me so when I got out of bed I looked up the etymology and found it quite interesting. Originally " dispose " seems to have meant to put something in it's ...

ingenuous

disingenuous/ingenuous I woke up this morning with "disingenous" in my head  - and of course immediately started thinking about its positive connotation. Although definitions and examples are readily available for both, it struck me as odd how much more "in use" disingenuo...

Librate

I ran across this word in a crossword puzzle as a definition or synonym of oscillate. I thought at first that it was a mistake and that they had meant for the answer to be vibrate, but upon digging a little deeper I discovered that it is indeed a valid answer. I thought it was odd enough that I shou...
