Being born and raised in Texas originally I, too, had heard the Spanish word pluma used to mean pen because of the word meaning "feather". I agree it is because of pens being originally made of quills. That's why I found it interesting that in the part of Chile where I was they used the word lápiz to mean both pencils and pens. Maybe it's just a Chilean thang. It's been a while since I've been back to Chile so honestly don't know if they still use the same word to mean both writing instruments. The Chileans I knew spoke primarily Castillian Spanish mixed with their own idioms. Funny what things stick in your mind.
