Now that you mention it, I do remember.

I really like the Diagnosis of ennui instead of lazy. Much more sophisticated for such an erudite board as this.

If you're posting from a PC, make a shortcut to Character Map to keep everything easily accessible.
For Mac, there are a few common Image+ shortcuts for special characters, if you don't want to consult an ASCI chart.

Gail, I morphed from computer expert in the 1960s through 1980s to computer illiterate in the 21st century. A stroke helped in this transition. I do not understand "make a shortcut to Character Map". Will you give me more details on what to do?

Sure! All Programs > Accessories (first folder after applications) > System Tools (second folder in list) > Character Map.

Depending on which system you're running you may be able to right-click it to make a shortcut (usually goes to desktop) or to select Pin to Taskbar or Pin to Startup, depending on how often you use them and what's most convenient for you. Hope that helps.

To make the desktop shortcut you have to go to "Send To" first. They made these things pretty hard to find, didn't they?

Are we still talking about my list of things I need?
Cedilla, hook over n, umlaut?
If so, I am completely lost in the above set of posts.
What does a computer user who know almost nothing do
to find these things?

Try this, assuming you are on a PC not a Mac:
On your keyboard is a key with a Windows icon. Mine is to the left of ALT on the left of the keyboard. Push this key, hold it down and type r. This opens a small window that says Run in the upper left corner.
In the Open box type charmap. That will open the Character Map.
You'll have to look for what you want, but everything is there.
Don't forget the Help button, too. That's a kind of tutorial on how to use the Character Map.

Hope that helps.

iPad makes it even easier. Find some place like this where you can type, then hold down the key you need, and voila: ń, ñ, ę, é, etc.

Wow! Slava, thanks so much.
I wondered what that button was for. I'll have to play
around with the tutorial to make it work and figure it
out, but I am very grateful.
I appreciate it very much.

I've never used that key (started out on a Mac and mentally still there sometimes!) so thanks for that tip, Slava.

Luke, as long as the featured font in Character Map is pretty standard (Arial or Helvetica, Times New Roman) you can select/copy/paste desired characters into web posts. You'll find just about everything you'll ever need: a plethora of Latin (Roman-based) alphanumerics and symbols (including archaic English letters); from Greek to Cyrillic; from Hebrew to Arabic; from international currency symbols to Maths symbols & fractions; and an assortment of wingding bullets, musical symbols, and card suits. All of that will work on most boards:

§ ® ʬ͏ Θ Я א پ ᴂ ₤ ► ☺ ♫ † ≤ ű Ñ ° ḉ ә ♥

But note that if you choose a dingbat font or something with ornamental characters you can apply them to your own documents, but copy/pasting to web posts will yield the alphanumeric characters occupying that spot in the standard fonts.

I must admit, I found out about it only a few years ago. and that by accident.
Window button + D will minimize all your open windows and show the Desktop.
+M locks your computer.
+B shows your battery status.
Etc.

Play around. As long as you don't say OK, nothing bad will happen. At least I hope.

Can't get these to work. Do I do something before
pressing the + sign?
If I were to lock the computer, how would I unlock it?

Windows button + whatever key.

Locking and unlocking depend on your settings. You may simply press any key and log back into your computer, or you may have to press the power button.

OK, merci.
Now to play around a little.

I apologize, perhaps why I get so frustrated.
You said "window button + D" and I went
right to the +D without the window button.
Not in the habit of using things outside the
keyboard, just don't follow directions well, I know.
