Lost Resources

I am asking for help.
Recently my computer's motherboard or fatherboard or one
of those things died. I had a friend build me a new computer
with up to date stuff.....you see I don't know the words for
all the terms everyone uses. I just hope to understand.
(I remember, slava, don't go too far down.)
But I lost all my resources in the process. I should have
"backed them up". So I am coming with request for favor....
Could those of you who read this send me the addresses
for sites you use, please?, so I can reconstruct bookmarks?

I need sites for translations, phrases we use, idioms,
language sites, etc. You know what I am looking for.
And I would be greatly appreciative.

I find this site, Alpha Dictionary, almost enough for my word explorations. I use Babelfish for translating a word or a few words at a time.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Here are a few links for starters:

http://www.phrases.org.uk/
http://www.worldwidewords.org/index.htm
http://etymonline.com/
http://www.dictionary.reference.com/
http://www.babelfish.com/

Far from all, I should imagine, but it's a start.

Yes this site is an entity among itself.
But those you gave me,slava, all five of them, were among
those I lost, and which I used frequently. Thanks so
much for forwarding them.

Glad to oblige. Hope you are soon back up and running properly.

I don't understand, Luke. Your resources should be on your hard drive, not your motherboard. Are you sure they aren't there?

Luke: The Good Doctor is right. Motherboards have other boards on them (like piglets sucking on the sow’s teats, hence the name). These include the processor and RAM. In a PC, your data and programs are on the C drive, an internal read/write disk memory. Ask the friend who helped you repair your computer how to retrieve your file. Remember to back up, at the least, your data on a CD, DVD or Flash memories.

However, you may have had a crash that fried your C drive. That does happen. I have had PCs long before there was a Microsoft and I have never lost any data. On the other hand my brother, a man of the cloth, has had several crashes where everything was lost. If I didn't back up a lot of his data on my computer, he would be up the creek without a paddle. I hope this brag doesn't put a hex on my computer. But only people who believe in hexes are subject to hexes.

I will collect a list of language sites I use that do not duplicate those others send. Although Alphadictionary is the only language site I use for discussion, I do have a long list of sites I use to search for language information. I already see some suggested sites from other contributors to this thread that I do not have. So your query has helped me and perhaps others.

This reminds me of a joke that I will post elsewhere.

I'm a strong advocate of the flash drive. I have both documents and pictures saved on a flash that I carry in a pocket in my keycase. I can thus restore everything except whatever I put in since the last backup - which I need to go do NOW!

Perry: Remember there is no drive in a flash memory. Nothing moves but electrons. I concede that flash drive is the most prominent name for the device. I use them extensively. I regularly back up my data on DVD's. I am contemplating getting an extra hard drive for quick, total backup.

I guess I did not know what the names and parts were
called much less used for. I saved all that was on my
provider. But the things that were in "favorites" disappeared
and I guess I don't know where they were stored or
why they disappeared. I had music and pictures stored
on a flashdrive, but the favorites on Internet Explorer
and the "other bookmarks" on Google Chrome are the
things I am referring to. They are all gone.
How does one put them on a flashdrive, if indeed that is
possible? I don't want to ever go through this again.

Ask someone who knows more than I do about cloud storage. More and more programs are automatically storing stuff in the "cloud," short for gigantic backup storage. Since these are national, yea international, programs, they may be backed up automatically in the cloud if we but knew how to retrieve them. A quick test would be to set up those programs on your new computer using the same name, password, etc. as previously. That might voila bring them back.

If you insist on walking around with your head in the cloud, you might have a major crash.

Luke, here is a link the specific WorldWideWords page (Slava already gave you the website) which lists English language related sites, blogs, dictionaries, etc. More than you can shake a stick at. Engage!
