By chance, a random click on an email from About.com led to a page on the most adapted best-seller novels of all time, and one of them was Brewster's Millions, originally written in 1902!! The Richard Pryor remake was number 10, and there's about to be an eleventh. :o

Just in case you want to read it, Brewster's Millions was first a book.

By George Barr McCutcheon in 1902.
