Lompoc

SYLLABICATION: Lom·poc
PRONUNCIATION: lŏm' pŏk'
A city of southern California west-northwest of Santa Barbara. Vandenburg Air Force Base is nearby. Population: 37,649.

But, from Wikipedia:

Lompoc (pronounced Lom' poke) is a city in Santa Barbara County, California, United States. The population was 41,103 at the 2000 census.

The Columbia Encyclopedia agrees with the Wikipedia pronunciation. That's only two out of the eight references given by One-Look that call for a long "o" (ō) in the last syllable; one entry didn't give a pronunciation.

Just wanted to tell all, speaking of Vandenberg AFB, that this evening, June 27th, is slated for the first Dleta4 missile launch on the west coast. A spy/recon. satalite, hmm... This is where I grew up. One could never tell when a missle launched or if it was a small earthquake. Very noisy. The powers that be will launch it from a pad called, affectionately, slick six, sometime between seven and nine p.m. local time. I wonder if all that fog will make them scrub the launch.. If one wishes to check it out you can go on line to www.Lompocrecord.com (sorry, I had a problem attaching the link for some reason-never mind, it's there). There was a good article this past Sunday, June 25th, there too. Slick six is where I was permitted to go aboard the Enterprise Space Shuttle back in the 80's. BTW:

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000 spelled Vandenberg wrong. So much for dictionaries giving the proper spelling and pronunciation for things

Hi all!

I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and just registered. 8)

Huny, my dad was in the Air Force while I was growing up and we lived mostly in Europe but he did have a stint at Vandenberg AFB where I went to high school. When we first got there we were calling it "Lompock" until quickly set straight by the locals! But I don't recall a casino there. Where was it?

And I do remember those missiles launching! The china in my mother's hutch would start rattling and we thought it was an earthquake! It was always fun to go outside (when we were still new) and watch the missile take its course up into the wild blue yonder. Neighbors would be outside watching, too.

Oh my God!! Hello! Did you go to Lompoc High or Cabrillio? The casino is in Santa Yenez. It was built in the 90's. Early to mid 90's if I remember right. Feel free to PM me if you want. I wonder of we know each other. :D :D
