Pecan

The pecan is the state tree of Texas. English pronunciations of pecan range from the ridiculous to the sublime. The dictionaries give several options but they do not exhaust the subject. Texans say puh-KHAN, a long, drawn out word. It doesn’t appear to be a “standard” pronunciation although I consider it sublime. The funniest pronunciation is one of the most common. It is PEE-can. That is what Texans call chamber pots. It is not a Yankee-Rebel dichotomy. Paula Dean doesn’t say it like Texans say it, although the way she says it is “real sweet” and I assume Southern. How do you say pecan?
