Geophagy (n)
The practice of eating earth, such as clay, chalk or dirt. Apparently a condition dependent on a dietary deficiency, causing the subject to seek a supplement in earth. In simple terms: eating dirt.
The compulsive habit of chewing on clay (chalk, etc) is called geophagia. Other related nouns are: geophagism and geophagist.
In use:
I like to use this rather arcane word in the sense: "I'd rather practice geophagy than visit Mother-in-Law this weekend."
According to the Online Etymoligical Dictionary:
"A diseased appetite ... prevails in several parts of Alabama, where they eat clay. I heard various speculations on the origin of this singular propensity, called 'geophagy' in some medical books." [Lyell, 1850]
Who knew?
Origin:
Greek: geo- "earth" + phagein "to eat." (Etymonline points out that "the actual Gk. was geotragia"
