Postby skinem » Sat Mar 03, 2007 4:57 pm

in·vest

Pronunciation:
\in-ˈvest\
Function:
transitive verb
Etymology:
Latin investire to clothe, surround, from in- + vestis garment — more at wear
Date:
circa 1534

1[Medieval Latin investire, from Latin, to clothe] a: to array in the symbols of office or honor b: to furnish with power or authority c: to grant someone control or authority over : vest2: to cover completely : envelop3: clothe, adorn4[Middle French investir, from Old Italian investire, from Latin, to surround] : to surround with troops or ships so as to prevent escape or entry5: to endow with a quality : infuse

I am reading letters that General Sherman wrote during the American Civil War, and came across the use of this word when he wrote "I will invest Savannah". I figured from the context it meant surround or envelope, but had never heard this word in this context.

Bailey, thanks for the heads up. Fixed it.

I know what you mean about going in circles. I, too, have been covered up looking for good investments.
