Gemel

Postby Grogie » Sat Apr 07, 2007 1:28 pm

I discovered this interesting word today. It refers to a ring for the finger with two or more separate or interlocking links. The word can also refer to any kind of a hinge. It comes from the Latin ''gemellus''(twin).

Interesting etymology, grogie...

I've always seen this written as gimmel ring. The separate parts can be individual, interlocking "serpentine" rings, or multiple rings joined by a hinge. The latter type is often figurative (clasped hands, for example) and/or have two parts which open to reveal a concealed object (such as a heart or gemstone) mounted on the third.

I discovered that, many centuries ago in England, there existed a kind of singing called ''gymel''. This word probably has the same root.
