Adj. exanimate - deprived of life; no longer living

Dang, I was sure this would be a Bushism.

Exanimate seems to be to kill, as downsize is to fire.

Tragically, Lucy Seward was exsanguinated; and then, to add insult to injury, exanimated as part of Dracula's posse.

Ah, how strange, and how cruel, can Fate be. This word posted at 10:16 am on Monday, shortly before our beloved Belle succumbed in her year-long fight against lymphoma at 10:30 am, peacefully, in the garden listening to the birds, just before her seventh birthday. I read the post later in the day.

For God so loved the dog that He gave her His own name with which to spell hers.

Thanks! It's just weird the way that word appeared that day.

I've often said, "I'd give my life for my dog, and so would my wife; give my life for the dog."

Dog owners know that dogs are really just four-footed, fanged, furry two-year-olds. (One of many taglines awaiting its turn.)

My sympathies, Stargzer.
... our beloved Belle succumbed in her year-long fight against lymphoma at 10:30 am, peacefully, in the garden listening to the birds, just before her seventh birthday.
My brother's dog always exuberantly cleared their yard of rabbits. In her last days, they spotted her out back, basking in the sun, surrounded by contented bunnies. It is sad to lose pets, but they leave wonderful memories.

Actually, when I first saw the word in the index, I misread it as examinate, and my first thought was a pun (or even a malapropism):
The forensics class was given an hour to examine ten pieces of evidence but they were only able to examinate in the time allotted.
However, this is a real yet older, out-of-date word:
Examinate:
(n.) A person subjected to examination.

(This definition is from the 1913 Webster's Dictionary and may be outdated.)
Only when I actually read the original post and realized I'd misread the original word did the irony hit me. By then the few tears had already been squeezed out of the rock, but I still miss her, and all my other dogs, and all my other friends that have gone on before; but you can always find them in your heart, and so, rather than pine away we pun away.

Best to all ...

//Larry

Brilliant!

Larry, sorry about Belle. She must have been a real sweetie. It shows through in the photograph.

That of course is the condensed version. The original is rather dry.

Well, I absconded with it long ago when I saw it on a button at Balticon. (Baltimore SciFi convention). Too cheap to buy the button but I wrote it down so I wouldn't forget it. Great tagline for a B.A. in Chemistry. (no B.S in my academic credentials ;-) )

Oh, yeah, just a two-year-old at heart. All she wanted to do was play, chase balls, go for a ride, eat ice cream ... she led a dog's life. :D The picture's from Halloween about two years ago. When her eyes weren't glowing from the flash of a camera they were a golden brown: Belle des Yeux D'Or as I often called her. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about Belle...it's tough losing a member of the family like that.
Our family has had a saying for a couple of generations..."If reincarnation is real, I want to come back as one of our dogs." They do bring a lot of joy to our lives.

Yes, if my dogs aren't in Heaven then I'll know I'm in Hell. One of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes is The Hunt, where a man (Played by Arthur Hunnicutt) drowns along with his coonhound (looks like a bluetick hound to me). The two go wandering around when no one acknowledges them. At a gate to one place, the gatekeeper tries to entice the man in, but says his dog can't come in. The dog growls at the gatekeeper. They continue on to another gate where both are welcome. The angel there says the other gate was "... the other place." "Even the Devil can't fool a dog."
