1. A privilege granted a person, as by virtue of birth: appanage, birthright, prerogative, right. Law : droit. See OWNED.
2. A material favor or gift, usually money, given in return for service: cumshaw, gratuity, largess, tip3. See GIVE, TRANSACTIONS.

perquisite (n.), prerequisite (adj., n.)
A perquisite is “something received over and above salary, a privilege granted to the holder of the position, a tip or an extra benefit”: One perquisite of his new post was a reserved parking place; perquisite regularly takes of (the perquisites of her new job). (See also PERK.) A prerequisite is “something required prior to the thing ultimately sought”: At least one advanced degree is a prerequisite for job application in this field. As an adjective prerequisite means that the referent of the word to which it is attached must be acquired first, before something else is sought, as in The prerequisite forms must be filed at least a week before the interview. Prerequisite combines more often with for and to, but occasionally with of: Membership in a political party is a prerequisite for [to, of] voting in a primary election in this state.
