Peckish

Postby sluggo » Sat Aug 04, 2007 10:57 am

Begat by Bailey's 'comestibles':
Bartleby says:
ADJECTIVE:
1. Ill-tempered; irritable.
2. Chiefly British Somewhat hungry.

ETYMOLOGY: From peck, to eat.
Origin: 1775–85 (Dictionary.com)

-wasn't aware of #1 though. Seems a reach.

Briefly invoked in previous suggestion Puckish (q.v.)
(which was a bit punnish)

Actually I was only lobbing a softball to gailr with this entry. Looks like she's not swinging.

That's because she's amiss.

High cheese indeed! Not too peckish to plate that run, I see. (And you're not even in the grapefruit league.)

Dat's cuz the infield fruit fly rule is in effect.
As eberntson would say, just fouling one off here...

I just noticed my screen's spell checker (now who put dat dere?) flags the word peckish. It wants to see puckish.

Ya gotta luff spiel chuckers.

Back in the WordPerfect days (well, I think it was WP and not even further back in time in the MultiMate epoch), the organization I worked for was known as the Bureau of Data Management and Strategy, or BDMS. Whenever WordPerfect encountered BDMS it suggested BUMS. Quite appropriate, actually, considering most of the managment and many of the employees.

Ahhh, SpellCheck. I once coordinated catalogs for a major children's wear manufacturer. There were people who scrutinized each fabric and screenprint design to ensure that there was nothing that a hypersensitive, pareidoliac consumer could point to as indecent and fodder for lawsuits or damaging publicity.

But no one was policing me. Just to be on the safe side I ran SpellCheck upon finishing one season's catalogs with a lot of trendy new terms, such as "scortall" (girls' skirt+shorts+overall bib). I had already accepted a position at another company and was very tempted to defer to Quark's dictionary.

It used to be that if you typed zzzz (like cartoon talk for sleeping) Word would sugest sex. It seems that now Word is more prim and proper, having corrected that issue.

Oddly mine moniker hath more to do with (perceived) sloth than baseball; nevertheless upon this very day I very nearly shagged one such literal foul from one Mr Andruw Jones who belongeth here anyway for his name alone).
