Please post some of the other guises of MSG, I am very interested.
However, umami is not MSG... just to be clear. I think it is interesting that they attribute the flavor "Savory" to Umami and say that it is the discovery of Japan. Not really an accurate statement. I say this because I have at least two old cooking texts that mention the savory flavor and they are from the 14th & the 16th century. Oh and a 18th century English butler text too.
It is so interesting that people get so excited just because someone says it is exciting to drum up more business for the holidays. My favorite savory right now is making gravy old Italian style where you cook meats on low in gravy for about 6 hours, now that is savory. I have to go eat something now, I'm to hungry... Bon Appetite!

Call it umami or yo' mama, I don't care. But there is something that gets to me when I have a good chunk of Parmigiano in my mouth. (A good thing I just had a big lunch, or I would be making myself hungry!)

In my studying, I've found out that all prepared[processed stuff you buy already prepared] soups contain enough MSG to make you plenty sick, and Taco Bell? KFC? forgetaboutit. They are all so laced with excito-toxins, you could be vegetative in a week! because it tastes so good for a reason, High Fructose corn syrup is making us fatter and more diabetic all the time, the additives and poisons in our foods would amaze you were I to tell you all. Just the ingredients in a soda would knock your socks off as to what it does to the human body.

Slugger, if that interests you then you should also know that white flour is now bleached with something called alloxan an ingredient everyone [but the manufacturers] agrees causes Diabetes, in fact it's what the scientists inject in rats to give them Diabetes to study it in rats.

Well, then, I guess one can't trust Wikipedia:Slugger, if that interests you then you should also know that white flour is now bleached with something called alloxan an ingredient everyone [but the manufacturers] agrees causes Diabetes, in fact it's what the scientists inject in rats to give them Diabetes to study it in rats.

Note that many things, including life-preserving prescription medications, can be toxic to the liver and kidneys in high doses.Alloxan
...
Impact upon beta cells
Because it selectively kills the insulin-producing beta-cells found in the pancreas, Alloxan is used to induce diabetes in laboratory animals. This occurs most likely because of selective uptake of the compound due to its structural similarity to glucose as well as the beta-cell's highly efficient uptake mechanism (GLUT2).
A 2005 website article links the presence of alloxan as an additive in white flour to the occurrence of diabetes and offers vitamine E as a countermeasure.[1] However, no scientific evidence to date substantiates this health food claim. As a matter of fact, scientific evidence shows that alloxan is not even toxic to the human beta-cell, even in very high doses, probably due to differing glucose uptake mechanisms in humans and rodents.[2][3]This drug is, however, toxic to the liver and the kidneys in high doses.

Humans are not rodents, although I've know more than a few humans who give rats a bad name.
