Zany

Postby Cacasenno » Fri Dec 28, 2007 10:05 am

Again from my Cassell's dictionary

Zany buffon, jester, plain good-natured.

From the Italian Zanni, diminutive of Giovanni (John), used in Venice to indicate the steretypical good natured servant from →Bergamo province, as represented in Reinassance comedy.

A surprise to find it in the English language after such a long time. But then---------how about Punch (pun)?

Great! I'd not known zany came from Giovanni.

In use, it's often paired with madcap.

So Cacasenno, you're starting at Z and working back?
Good work.

A friend named her son Zane. (Meaning unknown, from a surname. 'Zane Grey')
I'll let her know about zany/Zanni/Giovanni.
