the future: Good boys to whom to their books apply, will always be great men, by and by. -- Abraham Lincoln
Whoever wants to know something about me - as an artist which alone is significant - they should look attentively at my pictures and there seek to recognise what I am and what I want.

by-and-by(bī'ən-bī')

n.

Some future time or occasion.

---
Once I was in Victoria, and I saw a very large house. They told me it was a bank and that the white men place their money there to be taken care of, and that by and by they got it back with interest. We are Indians and we have no such bank; but when we have plenty of money or blankets, we give them away to other chiefs and people, and by and by they return them with interest, and our hearts feel good. Our way of giving is our bank.
— Chief Maquinna, Nootka

eat less, chew more;
whine less, breathe more;
talk less, say more,
and all good things will be yours.

From The Preacher and the Slave by Joe Hill
Long-haired preachers come out every night,
Try to tell you what's wrong and what's right,
But when asked about something to eat,
They will answer in voices so sweet:
Chorus:

You will eat bye and bye,
In that glorious land above the sky.
Work and pray, (work and pray),
Live on hay, (live on hay),
You'll get Pie in the Sky,
When you die, (that's a lie!)

And the starvation army they play,
They sing and they dance and they pray,
Till they get all your coin on the drum,
Then they tell you when you're on the bum:

CHORUS

If you fight hard for the good things in life,
They will tell you to stop all the strife,
Be a sheep for the bosses they say
Or to hell you are surely on the way!

CHORUS

Workingfolk of all countries unite;
Side by side we for freedom will fight
When the world and its wealth we have gained,
To the grafters we will sing this refrain:

Last Chorus:

You will eat, bye and bye,
When you've learned how to cook and to fry;
Chop some wood, 'twill do you good
And you'll eat in the sweet bye and bye.
(That's no lie!)

Somewhere Stargzer has a recording of they by Comrade Seeger.

I think most moralizing usages of this phrase can be summarized as follows:
Life's a b1tch.
And then you die.
By and by.

I think it all depends on your point of view. Right now it doesn't suck to be me. I might propose an additional line to your poem as follows:

Life's a b1tch.
Then you suffer. :twisted:
And then you die.
By and by.

But I tend to be more optimistic though,

Life's a b1tch.
Then redemption. :wink:
And then you die.
By and by.

Life's a b¡tch and so were two of my dogs.

Never call a quarrelsome woman a b¡tch; it's an insult to dogs of either gender everywhere.

My brother adores his wife and he doesn't cuss or use tobacco. (Dr. Goodword would be quite proud of him.) But this one time he told me. "Life's a b1tch and then you marry one." But he giggled nervously and I was kinda relieved to see him again...
