olive branch

An offer of peace. The government held out the olive branch to its opponents.
Whoever wants to know something about me - as an artist which alone is significant - they should look attentively at my pictures and there seek to recognise what I am and what I want.

The first time that a dove was recorded as carrying an olive branch, it meant the there was dry land and safety.

A long-ago parochial teacher told us the olive branch as a symbol of peace was twofold: 1) it was a valuable plant for health and 2) that it needs care and tending to become established (indicating that the ground it is growing on is 'at peace'). A quick skip through the Google doesn't immediately bear this out, but it's a nice folk explanation.
