ACELDAMA

Postby Bailey » Thu Jan 24, 2008 7:23 pm

a place with dreadful associations - (My Webster's explains the origin of this interesting word: "The potter's field, said to have lain south of Jerusalem, purchased with the bribe which Judas took for betraying his Master, and therefore called the field of blood.")
The Akeldama (Hakl-ed-damm) of to-day presents a large, square sepulchre, of which the southern half is excavated in the rock, the remainder being built of massive masonry. In the center stands a huge pillar, constructed partly of rough blocks and partly of polished stones. Much of its clay was taken away by Empress Helena and other prominent Christians, for sarcophagi.

It lies on a narrow level terrace on the south face of the valley of Hinnom.

Makes sense. Dam (דם) is blood, and hakl could be related to the modern Hebrew word for agriculture, haklaut(חקלאות).
