absquatulate/absquatulation

Postby uncronopio » Wed Jun 01, 2005 9:55 pm

From Wiktionary: Blended jocular mock-Latin word. Arose in America in the 19th century (about 1837). Probably made up of the following parts: The Latin adverb and prefix ab, "away (from)", (maybe taken from abscond), the suffix -ate (maybe taken from perambulate or undulate), and the middle portion, "squatul", which might be a derivation of to squat. Obsolete by 1900.

absquatulation: the action of going away suddenly and squatting somewhere; making off, decamping.
"Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest." -- Mark Twain

I want to be the first to say it: I don't know squat about absquatulation.

That's a nice combination of squat and the corner I've referred to multiple times.
