Or Iran's current president Ak-mah-din-e jad. And
the word Mehico. We were always taught Chilay for the
country, so I bristle at Chilly.
And there's also the Chinese. Xaioping (?) X is SH, I
think. Beiping, Beijing, Bejing ????
And here in the Plains: Missourah, or Missouri?
I guess it's a matter of choice. I have a friend from China whose name is Peixin. She says Peyk-sing (or something close). Everyone else, including her hubby, calls her Peyzhin.

Likewise, there is a small town near me called Clinton. The Clinton-born folks say Clinnon, while everyone else pronounces it the way Bill and Hillary do.

And what do you do with Peru, which is pronounced Pe-du in Peru?

We have a town nearby, Maryville, which the locals
call Marval. And another, Hooper, which the folks
who live there call Hupper.

Of course another funny thing that goes on here
is reversing the state's name. It becomes
Ak-Sar-Ben. And is used for everything from
Paint stores, to plumbers, electricians, horseracing site.
So.Dakota has a horse racing site with the state spelled
backwards: Atokad. I wonder if other states do that??

Not in South Carolina. It would be too hard to pronounce. We stick with Southern, Carolina, Upstate, and, occasionally, Dixie.

Yeah, Anilorac sounds like a medicine for indigestion.

Could a severe earthquake in Australia lead to a tsunami in New Zealand? NZ has got a few tsunami warnings after the earthquakes in Samoa and Chille but nothing major has come from them, just water suges and small waves.

And whilst we discuss "tsunamis" let us not forget their gargantuan cousins, "Rogue Waves" which can reach heights exceeding 100 feet. Very few witnesses to those waves...

I am so glad I live 1000 miles inland. All we get are
tornadoes, simple little things that they are.

Who would have thought that less than a month after the previous post this word would become of grave importance yet again? It looks like the Japanese prepared well for "The Big One," just not the right one. The earthquake was bad enough, but the ensuing tsunami seems to have wreaked even more havoc.

bnjtokyo, how have you fared in this matter? I hear tales of the Japanese mainland moving some 8 feet (I'm assuming to the West, though the reports haven't actually said as much). I hope you and yours are not overly affected.

As for living far inland in the continental US, I'm waiting to see if New Madrid goes off again. Rumor has it that the last time this quake site quaked, it made church bells in Boston ring.

Not much on the New Madrid fault. Occasionally it
does some movement, but folks here are so "unused"
to quake movement they think it's just a truck somewhere
hitting a pothole. Tornado season, however, is soon
upon us, and there are drills for them.
(How I remember the Bomb warnings and bomb shelters
as well back in the early days of the cold war.)

First, a moment of silence for the Japanese in their plight.

Next, the real tsunami has produced a virtual tsunami of 803,000,000 hits on Google. This huge number must be a measure of the world's concern.

Sounds like Pat Robertson after the Haiti quake. Dorks.

Where'd that one come from anyway? Just what is a dork?

Sorry, I didn't mean to ask where your comment came from. I was being self-referential and asking where dork came from.
