contradistinction

Postby Klimt » Sun Oct 31, 2010 2:13 pm

a distinction drawn on the basis of contrast

sculpture in contradistinction to painting

Just as he liked and praised a country life in comparison with the life he did not like, so too he liked the peasantry in contradistinction to the class of men he did not like, and so too he knew the peasantry as something distinct from and opposed to men generally.
Whoever wants to know something about me - as an artist which alone is significant - they should look attentively at my pictures and there seek to recognise what I am and what I want.

So are peasants another gender, or another species?
