I have a question about this word, 'resurgence', prompting me to ask you to choose it for Word-of-the-day sometime.

Why is there no word 'surgence', if 'resurgence' means, 'to rise again'? What if I want to describe something that is merely rising the first time? Why is that not legal?

These are the questions that I wonder about.

To add fuel to the fire, what about surges that retreat? Do they desurge? Unsurge? Outsurge? (Nah, that one's limited to jobs leaving America. Oops, sorry, that's outsource.) Perhaps backsurge?
