Biblical impact

Postby MTC » Sun Feb 13, 2011 3:28 am

The Bible has had an enormous impact on the English Language.
"Jubilate" is taken from the opening words of the 100th Psalm. It is but one example of many words and phrases plucked from the pages of the Bible. Think of "Eden," "Babel" and "Sodom," for instance. All these words had a specific meaning in the Bible, but over many years have come to have a more general meaning in English. Other words refer to Biblical events. Take "antedeluvian" ("before the Flood") for example.
Lest you think this is an effort by a Christian to turn the Goodword forum into a Sunday School, it is not. I could hardly be more secular, but I do appreciate the contributions of the Bible to the English language.
