What is the best dictionary to dwnload online? I would like to download just a pure dictionary,if such a thing is possible.I did once download a dictionary, but there seemed to be strings attatched,it sort of automatic became the home page on its own accord.Would appreciate gould advice from those who have downloaded dictionaries in the past.Possibly what happened before with me is part and parcel of the download.Thank you.

I've Never downloaded a dictionary, but I can help you with the homepage problem. Several apps I use, esp Incredimail, keep trying to install themselves as search engines or as home pages. I use Firefox as a browser, which alerts me to the problem, so I can decline it. However, when another site has taken over, I click and hold on the bookmark for MyYahoo ( my preferred start page) and drag it to and over the little house icon on the toolbar, where I release it. That restores my home page.
I use online dictionaries, most often going to the word search blank on AlphaDictionary. I most often use American Heritage and the etymological dictionary. I was surprised to find AH seems superior now to Webster's, at least online. That's contrary to my previous experience.

I've never thought of downloading a dictionary myself. If I'm online, I use dictionary.com. If I'm not online, I use a real book. I believe the OED is available on CD, but it is bound to be pricey.
