A book, paper, essay or treatise on a specific, narrow subject.
[From mono-, one; -graph, something written.]

"The historian grew tired of writing scholarly monographs on obscure aspects of ancient civilization, and decided to write a general history of the world."

"The musicologist produced monographs about female bandleaders, German jazz, and the development of drumsticks."

Not to be confused with monogram.

I'm not sur how Sherlock found the time to do any detecting, as he seems to have produced a plethora of monographs. Seems few stories go by without his modestly mentioning one.
