Main Entry: blo·vi·ate

Function: intransitive verb
Inflected Form(s): -ed/-ing/-s
Etymology: probably irregular from blow + -i- + -ate
: to orate verbosely and windily
The bloviating Senators (a redundancy, I know, but I did it for emphasis) of the U.S. Senate have recently brought this word to my mind.

for some reason this word reminds me of dead cows, blow (up)+ bovine, they get really puffed up before they explode, and here we are back to hubris, and hamartia....

Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly always closes his program by saying to emailers, "And no bloviating; that's my job."

Thanks, Katy ! By the way, what is the received term for such a group and/or forum as ours ? I have the feeling that it is distinct from a «chat group», although I should be pressed to define that distinction more closely....

discussion board

A discussion board (known also by various other names such as discussion group, discussion forum, message board, and online forum) is a general term for any online "bulletin board" where you can leave and expect to see responses to messages you have left. Or you can just read the board. The first discussion boards were available on bulletin board systems. On the Internet, Usenet provides thousands of discussion boards; these can now sometimes be viewed from a Web browser.
Today, many Web sites, including Whatis.com and other TechTarget.com sites, offer a discussion board so that users can share and discuss information and opinions
