Gailr recently used this word. Looking it up, I find it goes back to geck which meant fool or stupid. Then it became common usage in circuses for wild men and weirdos, such as those who bit heads off chickens. One source says that was in the 80s the teenagers began using the term to refer to the socially inept. Later it became more specific to the socially inept who are very in-depth indeed at computers.

My own observation is that it has become a badge of pride for the technologically superior. They speak with pride of being a geek.

I was working on a pun to hipster, but alas, geekster already has a presence at Urban Dictionary, and in a field guide at Wired...

I feel old.
