irreparable

I made the mistake - ONCE - of pronouncing this word "irrepairable". I see from the etymology that the Latin root means "not repairable" and maintained its dignity with its permutation into French as "irréparable". Is this another instance of English double dipping and using one variant as the positive and the original as the negative or is someone just having fun?
