I was watching an old movie and they were making fun of "May Day" and I though of people >> das Volk >> folk! This is one of those simple words that has lots of definition new, archaic, and just plain folksy. When you look at the etymology of the word it get much more interesting, certainly Old German folc, Old Dutch volc, and it take awhile to get to German volk.

This is one of those words where I think the old trading languages are not mentioned and they could explain some of the migration of the word. see Plat Deutsche. Often these little root words have some much that is interesting about them.

Interesting also that it may have once meant a host of warriors. Also that in OH German it was spelled with an "f".
