Dorothy Parker quotes aside, I first ran across this word while an undergraduate at Michigan State University when I enjoyed excursions through the horticultural gardens, which, after all these years, I realize is redundant.

Do you mean that all hortis are automatically cultured?

Here is a US postage stamp issued in 1958 for gardening and horticulture:

It was rather scandalous at the time, with many complaints over the state of undress. It's not considered one of the best designs.
