ingratiate

Postby William Hupy » Wed Jul 09, 2014 9:09 am

With this word you bring yourself into favor with someone. This is interesting because the "in" prefix is not a negative. Is this word an orphan?

What if it were spelled "engratiate"? The e-n if from Greek has the meaning of in as into. Thus, to curry favor with. I suspect that meaning is the source of ingratiate, through Latin.
