Vellichor

Postby Grogie » Sat Apr 04, 2015 10:42 am

The strange wistfulness of used bookstores. ''He walked into the old used bookstore and immediately felt the vellichor.'' This word seems to be one that deserves to be better known.

Did you make it up? Or where did you find it, and whence cometh it? I do know the feeling. "My heart leaps up" at the sight of any bookstore.

It's a neologism from one John Koenig and his site The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. It got a nice write up on the World Wide Words site, http://www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/ww-vel4.htm.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

I like the word and its meaning, and can see a possible parallel with the oft-discussed petrichor.
