a soft sheer gauzy fabric; something delicate, light, or flimsy; a fine film of cobwebs often seen floating in the air or caught on bushes or grass - GOSSAMER (dictionary.com explains that this word comes from Middle English gos 'goose' and somer 'summer' and was probably coined from the abundance of gossamer during early autumn when geese are in season ...)

I think it was referring to the season when migratory geese virtually live all over your lawn if you have a puddle close also the amount of the down on the goose breast is much thicker in the fall before a hard winter. I wish the weather guessers would get out their rulers instead of what ever augury they read. Mice, even dogs grow a thicker undercoat in years when the winter will be extremely harsh.
