contumelious

Postby damoge » Tue Jan 26, 2016 9:13 pm

having watched (recently) the debate between Gore Vidal and William Buckley, I was even more impressed when I ran across the word "contumelious" and was chagrined I didn't have it available while watching the debate with friends.

Worth looking at for a column? (have mr Trump in mind, now)

agreed!
the affect exhibited this cycle is painful, and encouraging the general populace to behave likewise.
I live in Washington state. The news, all night, was Malheur. That would be another interesting word for a column, given the context.

Sigh.

I must admit that fellow is slightly confusing. Universally despised (to 99% at least) over here in the UK I'd warrant, due to his obstructionist law suits, dubious at best business practices and obvious demagoguery. However Americans seem to take to him somewhat - I fail to grasp this, admiring many aspects of said people. Do they just enjoy the contumelious facet of his demeanour?

well, I must say, you're not alone in your confusion. The local pundits, most especially the Republican and conservative ones, are also trying to make sense of him. They've moved from smiling and predicting his departure in short order, to fairly frantic attempts to write a future with him as president that they could live with.
As a liberal, I'm hoping he will be the nominee as I think it is our best chance of ending up with a democrat in the position. That is not to say I look forward to Hillary as our next leader, but I would fear the election of a republican at this point because the next president is apt to be in a position to select more than one supreme court justice.

It's a mess no matter how you look at it, as far as I can see.

To quote Ed Tom Bell in No Country for Old Men:
"If it ain't, it'll do till the mess gets here."
