Dreadnought

Postby William Hupy » Tue Feb 02, 2016 11:58 pm

This compound word would have been familiar to the general English speaking population 100 years ago, but has not withstood the test of time. Even its component parts are probably unfamiliar today with those people who seem to know and use only words such as like, awesome and perfect!
Why are there two variations: naught and nought? Is there a difference?

I'm personally more likely to think of the numeral 0 with the word nought. For the record, in WWII you still heard battleships called dreadnaughts from time to time, presumably because such heavy armor and formidable cannons led them to fear nothing. Nevertheless, several were sunk.
