Immutable, mutability, transmute:
Well people do you remember a series of comics by the name “teenage mutant ninja turtles”? It was about 4 turtles fighting against evil; I think it was because of some chemical accident that these turtles mutate into giant anthropomorphic turtles. Anyways today they are going to help us remember the aforementioned words. The word mutant comes from the Latin root “mutare”, which means to change.
Immutable (Adj): unchangeable.
This word can be split up as “im” which means “not”+ “mutare” means to change, thus the meaning develops as unchangeable.
Antonym: mutable
Contextual example:
1) It has been found out that the nature favors change and everything that is natural is not immutable.
2) In this era of cutthroat competition being immutable is a very easy way to kill your brand and throw yourself out of the market.
Mutability (N): ability to change form; fickleness.
Mutability can be split as “mutare” + “habilis” .The root “habilis” comes from “habere”, which means, “to hold”. Someone who is capable to hold is habile. Lets not veer off too much from our main root “mutate”.
Contextual example:
1) His mutability was one of the reasons many people were not able to predict his actions.
2) The mutability of the plant allowed it to acclimatize in harsh environments.
Transmute (V): change; convert to something different
The root “trans” means “across, beyond, through” and “mutare” as we all know means “to change”. The meaning develops as follows: to change thoroughly means to change across the whole length, breadth and depth of a particular thing.
Contextual example:
Coming back to India after his masters he was very sad to see that nothing had transmuted.
Some simple words to remember the root:
Commute (V): to travel, exchange.
Contextual example:
He commuted each day to his office by a chartered Aeroplane.
Mutual (Adj): shared by equally by two or more, common.
Contextual example:
1) She was divorcing him because; she thought that they had no mutual understanding.
2) Mutual funds allow people to invest money according to their ability into scrips that have a chance to give disproportionate and also favoring returns to investors.
Feedback, cognates, discussion are always welcome.
