Journalese

A rather interesting piece from the Johnson section of The Economist:

It is, of course, British English, so it would be fun to see what Americanisms, or other Englishes, we can come up with.

The first journalese term that comes to mind is "alleged." Probably from fear of lawsuits and PC, every crime is only alleged, even when the perpetrator is caught in the act. Also in America there is a tendency in many papers to pun in headlines, although I enjoy that. I may add others in the morning after reading the paper.
