The Ghost

While strolling through a graveyard on a moonless night
I saw an apparition of transparent light
Beside a headstone was a strange ethereal head
With tomb-like looks, yet not irrevocably dead
"Hi there", I said.

"You must not venture through this place!" the visage cried.
"I have no necrophilic motive", I replied,
Hoping—nay, praying—that the specter felt the same.
It glared, and told me to substantiate my claim
Or die in shame.

So I explained the cause of my nocturnal walk:
My melancholy spirit made me seek the dark.
A lambent arm appeared. "Look thither", howled the ghost,
At all the souls that call this cemetery host.
Dude, you'd be toast!"

“Ill bread? Poor Yorick never uttered words so vile!”

So I'll end it!

I am really impressed, but, alas, I followed it without
making any contributions. You guys are too good for me.
When I thought it was going to go one way, it took a
turn. I was sort of rooting for the ghost for awhile,
I'll confess.

Bravo, bravo! ! !

Hey, Luke.

Save your applause. We have one more verse to go, and the ghost might just win! It depends the next five lines.

By-the-by, I did send the previous poem into my local paper. Not only did they not publish it, they did not even deign to reply.

But this is the best yet. Try one of the poetry mags. This one should be preserved, framed, and sold in Haloween catalogues!

You're putting a lot of pressure on the dynamic duo! I hope we can deliver a winning fifth stanza! SAP

(I suppose that "end it" was a poor choice, since some of you assumed that the poem was over. I revised the last line to correct that assumption.)

I guess I was not entirely clear in my previous post. The poem I was speaking of was the Polysemous one on politics and elections.
