I think it must be a US thing. A friend from the States mentioned that this is a holiday weekend. Could anyone enlighten me what he's celebrating?

Labor day, traditionally on the first Monday of September, the rugrats are off to school on the next Tuesday. but times change and I'm not sure of the new rulz,m we have no rugrats here in my home, life has it's compensations, like labor day..

Yes, now the kids are off to school before Labor Day here in the US, although when I was growing up we always started after Labor Day.

Labor Day weekend is still considered the psychological end of summer, however.

Ah, now I am enlightened. It's quite a nice thing to have a psychological turning points in the calendar. We have the last Monday in August off -- a kind of last chance get away weekend. I think it's officially called something rather mundane like Late Summer Bank Holiday. As for Labo(u)r Day, we tend to observe it on 1 May, or there abouts -- the commies that we are!

There's a holiday in Brazil at least once every month (there's one, though, that doesn't have any). Wednesday September 7 is another holiday, we became independent from Portugal's clutches.

Garzo, our May holiday is Memorial Day at the end of May, which is the psychological beginning of summer. I've even heard people refer to each holiday as the other, in casual speech, obviously mixing up their bookends!

Here's to Brazil for celebrating their independence!

BD, Is it really Brazillian Independance? How do you celebrate it? is your celebration mostly arial display? Libationary? or family get together?

we celebrate with fireworks and a barbeque, but you are in winter, spring?

Nobody goes to work or school and there are parades on the street with music. Really interesting...

And it's winter now (so I think), although the weather hasn't been very wintery lately.

Everyone here except for minimum wage jobs gets the day off with pay here. I'm sure in larger cities there are parades, but fireworks and barbeques are our traditional ways to celebrate here.

Yeah, all holidays are paid here as well, and so are vacations.

Brazilian dude, who gets his vacation TWICE a year, hehehehe.

But I'm such a hard-working guy that I even work on my vacations, Katy, so that I can make some extra bucks as well.
