Ax or ask?

Shakespeare, Chaucer, and the Coverdale Bible all used "ax" or "axe" for "ask." We think using "ax" is low culture, but ck out this article from the Smithsonian:

While I understand the reasoning, I must admit I can't readily accept the hatchet job on the regular pronunciation. I'm not an ask murderer.
